   POMPEI AND HERCULANEUM

Today Pompei receives numbers of visitors wishing to discover what remains of the antic splendours of the Roman Empire in 80 B.C. Pompei was semi destroyed and covered following the eruption of the Volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 B.C. and forgotten for years.

The excavations started in the 18th century and gradually uncovered the fabulous villas with alfrescos preserved over time, an amphitheatre and much more to show the prosperity of the city in the past. The excavation works have not yet finished and continue to this day with the aim of donating treasures of the past to the modern world.

Herculaneum was destroyed, along with Pompei, by the eruption of Volcano Monte Vesuvius in 79 B.C. Herculaneum was a residential area, without commercial importance unlike Pompei, which was full of rich villas owned by the well-to-do Romans.
Herculaneum was submersed by a torrent of lava that transformed itself into soft rock and thanks to this many frescos and objects have been well preserved and can be seen today. A part of the old Herculaneum is still today submersed and excavations continue.
